Rukiya Symister, MA, LMFTA, PhD
Rukiya takes a personalized approach to therapy, treating each client as a whole person rather than focusing solely on their diagnosis. She integrates various therapeutic methods, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), to support her clients. Her areas of expertise include sexual trauma, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance use challenges, generational trauma healing, life transitions, the stress and isolation of living abroad, and couples therapy. Rukiya is deeply committed to her clients, offering compassionate, empathetic, and understanding care.
Rukiya holds a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Walden University and completed a year long internship at Elevate Health and Wellness. Additionally, she holds a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Hope International University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology from Stony Brook University.
When not working, she enjoys immersing herself in different cultures and exploring new countries through travel. She is also fluent in French.
Rukiya recently graduated with her PhD from Walden University with the goal of becoming a Licensed Clinical Psychologist soon. She is currently pursuing a post-doctoral internship in New York and Connecticut and is focused on evaluation and testing for a variety of adolescents and adults. Her career pursuits are built on a solid academic foundation that includes a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Hope International University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology from Stony Brook University. With a deep understanding of the complexities of human behavior, Rukiya believes in a personalized approach to therapy, recognizing that each client is unique and deserving of tailored treatment. Utilizing diverse therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Rukiya effectively addresses a range of issues, including sexual trauma, depression, anxiety, and the challenges associated with substance use.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Rukiya comes from a lively family known for its big personalities, fostering a deep appreciation for humor and connection. An avid hiker and traveler, she loves exploring new cultures and indulging in the culinary delights of various countries. Rukiya is also committed to continuous professional growth, holding certifications in chemical addiction and engaging with several professional organizations. Through a combination of personal experience and academic knowledge, Rukiya is dedicated to helping clients navigate life’s challenges and achieve lasting healing.
